Joe Schafer, a local self taught artist who has developed his own unique style of creating stunning landscape paintings on metal canvases shares his technique with us in this interview. After a successful career as a house painter he discovered his talent for fine art faux finishes which lead him to experiment using mixed media in the fine art realm. It is through this experimentation that he learned to express his love of the beauty of the surrounding wilderness in our area. His scenes of mountain and desert landscapes use sand, dyes, stains and water. Many times the canvases are left outside to let the natural elements add to his process, and using tools for scraping he brings aspects of the metal background into the image. His artwork captures the contemplative qualities of the landscapes that inspire him and the viewer. You can usually find Joe creating in his studio in the Smiley Building Art Room Collective.
