Ronald DePinho, M.D., explains how telomerase, typically linked to telomere maintenance, serves as a transcriptional co-activator in the brain. Epigenetic repression of TERT, the gene for telomerase, occurs with aging, contributing to aging hallmarks like cellular senescence and inflammation. DePinho's team developed a compound that reactivates TERT, which, when administered to mice, reverses age-related changes.
