Dr. Eric Stephen’s dissertation research was all about how researchers fall into traps using datasets they don't curate themselves. Stephens discusses how social justice researchers employ the doctrine of double effect to justify unintentional exploitation of their subjects, and proposes a big data research method to counter those exploitations by focusing on data created by institutions and not users.
