NATO has been a critical pillar of US foreign policy since its inception in 1949. Since the end of the Cold War however, NATO’s purpose has been reimagined, its challenges expanded, and its unity weakened. What will the future of US-NATO relations look like under the incoming Biden administration, and what role will the alliance play in US foreign policy? To help us answer these questions, today on the podcast we are joined by Dr. James Goldgeier

James Goldgeier is a Professor of International Relations and served as Dean of the School of International Service at American University from 2011-17. He is also a Robert Bosch Senior Visiting Fellow at the Center on the United States and Europe at the Brookings Institution. He was a Visiting Senior Fellow at the Council on Foreign Relations from 2017-19 and in 2018-19, he held the inaugural Library of Congress Chair in U.S.-Russia Relations at the John W. Kluge Center.
He has authored or co-authored four books including: America Between the Wars: From 11/9 to 9/11 (co-authored with Derek Chollet); Power and Purpose: U.S. Policy toward Russia after the Cold War (co-authored with Michael McFaul); and Not Whether But When: The U.S. Decision to Enlarge NATO.
