Stanford University Women's Soccer player, Katie Meyer, died by suicide on March 1, 2022. Katie, 22 years old, is remembered as a "shining star" both on and off the soccer field. It is believed that Ms. Meyer was involved in a university disciplinary hearing and if Ms. Meyer had counsel, at the outset, and over the course of the proceeding she may have been able to better manage the stress imposed by the threat of a looming academic discipline. In this episode, we explore whether universities should implement an early notification system, whereby student-athletes are provided information about their rights, legal counsel, and support services available to them upon receiving communications that the student is the target or will be involved in a disciplinary action. Should universities provide student-athletes with "Miranda-type Warnings?" Join the conversation on Apple Podcast and don't forget to leave a 5-star rating. Happy 50th Anniversary Title IX Title IX was enacted in 1972 with the intent of ensuring greater inclusion of girls and women in sport. Today we discuss whether this landmark legislation is under threat with the inclusion of transgender athletes. Currently, proponents of a "female first" Title IX position point to scientific based arguments as the reason to exclude transgender athletes. Parents and supporters of transgender athletes also present a compelling argument that sport is not about the "win" but about the journey of community, health, discipline and friendship.
