For many travelers, Antarctica is a bucket-list destination, a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to touch all seven continents. In 2023, a record-breaking 100,000 tourists made the trip. But the journey begs a fundamental question: What do we risk by traveling to a place that is supposed to be uninhabited by humans? And as the climate warms, should we really be going to Antarctica in the first place? SHOW NOTES: Kara Weller: The Impossible Dilemma of a Polar Guide Marilyn Raphael: A twenty-first century structural change in Antarctica’s sea ice system Karl Watson: First Time in Antarctica Jeb Brooks : 7 Days in Antarctica (Journey to the South Pole) Metallica - Freeze 'Em All: Live in Antarctica Learn about your ad choices: dovetail.prx.org/ad-choices…

Steve MacBeth, a three-tour Afghan war veteran, offers a compelling, first-hand account of Canada’s involvement in one of the most protracted and most complex conflicts of the 21st century. In his book No names no packdrill. Through vivid and unfiltered interviews with 150 frontline soldiers, this book captures the diverse experiences of those who served. These soldiers share their stories from the front lines of Afghanistan, detailing the challenges, sacrifices, and moments of camaraderie they encountered. The title, inspired by the military expression “no names, no pack drill”—intended to ensure lessons are learned from soldiers’ experiences without identifying those involved—reflects the humility and quiet professionalism of the Canadian soldiers, who are culturally uncomfortable with recognition for their service.…

Dr Helen Murray joins me for a Coppuccino and we work to through a lot of the myths, rumors and facts about CTE. Dr Helen Murray is a research fellow at the Centre for Brain Research. She is co-PI of the Tauopathy Lab with Dr Brigid Ryan and leads the brain injury and dementia research group. She completed her PhD at the University of Auckland with Professor Maurice Curtis in 2017 and a post-doctoral fellowship with Dr Alan Koretsky at the National Institutes of Health in Bethesda, USA in 2020 before returning to New Zealand. Her research explores the biological mechanisms that link repetitive head injuries and neurodegeneration. She has specific expertise in the neuropathology of Chronic Traumatic Encephalopathy (CTE), Alzheimer's disease, and Parkinson's disease. Dr Murray studies post-mortem human brain tissue donated to the Neurological Foundation of NZ Human Brain Bank and uses a novel tissue labelling technique called multiplex immunohistochemistry to label up to 100 proteins on a single piece of tissue. This powerful high-content labelling and analysis approach allows different tissue pathologies to be assessed at a single-cell level using just one tissue section. Dr Murray is also a New Zealand representative in Ice Hockey since 2013 and captained the New Zealand Ice Fernz from 2016-2020. Her research on the link between repetitive head injuries and dementia is closely aligned with her experience as an athlete and her expertise in human neuropathology research.…

Coppuccino podcast in association with Tactical Solutions speaks with Chanelle Moriah - author of new book 'I AM AUTISTIC' published by Allen & Unwin NZ I AM AUTISTIC - When Chanelle Moriah was diagnosed with autism at 21, life finally began to make sense. Hungry for information, Chanelle looked for a simple resource that could explain what autism is and how it can impact the different areas of an autistic person's life, but found that there was little written from the perspective of someone who is autistic. So Chanelle decided to create that missing resource. Chanelle discovered just how difficult it can be for autistic adults - particularly females or those assigned female at birth - to be diagnosed or even be assessed for autism. This is partly because there is very little understanding of the different ways autism can present itself. I Am Autistic is a tool for both diagnosed and undiagnosed autistics to explain or make sense of their experiences. It also offers non-autistic people the chance to learn more about autism from someone who is autistic. With clear sections describing the different aspects of autism, accompanied by Chanelle's beautiful illustrations, and with space for readers to write down their thoughts, this book is designed to be personalized to the individual's experience. I Am Autistic helps people feel less alone in their autism and brings knowledge to an often-misunderstood condition. I am Autistic is available at all good booksellers and online book stores now…

Jamie Wall is a freelance sports writer, specializing in rugby, and is the best selling author of Brothers in Black, Heroics and Heartbreak and Facing the Haka. His brand new book is 'The Hundred Years' war New Zealand vs Springboks . The Hundred Years' War is the story of the intense competition between the All Blacks and the Springboks over the past 100 years, the games they've played and the battles that have raged from parliaments to the streets. It's an examination of two cultures brought together by rugby, torn apart by racism, then brought back together to forge a new era of rivalry. There are heroes and villains on both sides, on and off the field. For every tale of battling the Boks on the highveld or in the mud of a New Zealand winter, there's one of political intrigue, injustice or cowardice. The events off the field have dramatically shaped those on it, as both the nations and the teams have undergone huge changes. The test matches played between the two sides defined both the Springboks and All Blacks. They have a saying in South Africa: 'You're not a real Springbok until you've played the All Blacks' - perhaps the greatest sign of respect an opposition side has ever paid the most successful team in the world. This is a history of the most brutal and relentless rugby ever played, and the century of bitter struggles that have come with it.…

Ryan's book TIP OF THE SPEAR is available at all good booksellers... Sergeant First Class (SFC) Ryan Hendrickson is a brave, determined, and courageous soldier — a Green Beret clearing the way for his twelve-man team while conducting combat operations against the Taliban. As the “tip of the spear,” his role is to ensure the route taken by U.S. and Afghan troops are free of IEDs — improvised explosive devices. Many soldiers do not survive their last step; those who do often lose at least one limb. While rescuing an Afghan soldier outside a mud-hut compound in 2010 — knowing that he was in “uncleared” territory — Ryan stepped on an IED with his right foot. The device exploded, leaving his foot dangling at the end of his leg. American soldiers losing a limb is an all-too-common occurrence. But what makes Ryan’s story different is that after undergoing two dozen surgeries and a tortuous rehabilitation, he was medically retired but fought to return to active duty. Multiple skin grafts to his leg and right foot successfully reattached his lower leg, and he was aided in his recovery by wearing a new prosthetic device known as an IDEO (Intrepid Dynamic Exoskeletal Orthosis). Once he passed a series of crucial physical tests, Ryan was able to rejoin the Green Berets within a year and physically perform his duties, redeploying to Afghanistan in March 2012. In 2016, he volunteered to return to Afghanistan with Bravo Company, 2nd Battalion, 7th Special Forces Group. During a firefight with the Taliban, he risked his life under heavy enemy fire to rescue three Afghan soldiers cut off from friendly forces and return the bodies of two dead Afghan soldiers under the ethos that “no one gets left behind.” For his heroic efforts on the battlefield, SFC Ryan Hendrickson was awarded a Silver Star, the nation’s third-highest award for valor. An engaging and harrowing account, Tip of the Spear tells the amazing story of one Green Beret’s indomitable spirit.…

By fusing the real and the imagined in her stories of early Antarctic exploration, she reveals the human aspirations and tragedies that have shaped our understanding of what remains an utterly inhuman place. As an Antarctic writer and communicator, Joanna believes strongly that engaging with Antarctic history encourages a deeper connection with a globally significant continent that few will ever visit. While focusing on polar exploration, her ever-popular school sessions guide students in examining the continued importance of resilience, perseverance and curiosity in all human endeavours.
