These short discussions aim at providing information, support, and encouragement for others by unfolding the myriad aspects.

For many years now, Afterthoughts has been a sort of intellectual watering hole for classical, Charlotte Mason homeschooling mamas. At Afterthoughts, we have spent over a decade nourishing our minds on theology, educational philosophy, and a million other books and subjects thrown in – all the while bringing these ideas into a direct collision course with our daily lives. As an audio companion, this podcast is a chance to hear Afterthoughts blog posts rather than read them. Couple that with ...

A mother contacted me a few months ago because her Form 1B student was enjoying everything in the program except Bible lessons. She asked for my advice. Should she try a different Bible translation? A different commentary? A different lesson format? My answer may have surprised her. I suggested a different attitude. An attitude of … The post Revere…

I’m so honoured to introduce you to the incredible mother, mentor, educator and encourager, Leslie Martino. Leslie and I chatted over zoom; she was in sunny Florida, chatting peacefully as her mother took her children for a walk, and I was in chilly Coventry hushing and ushering children into other rooms in the house, as usual. In my first article in this series, I highlighted a quality that Charlotte Mason said should accompany “all our teaching of children”: reverence. This is a quality that I began to realize was sorely lacking in my own lessons, so I resolved to do something about it. But was this going to be something that … The post Reverence in Lessons first appear…

Today I have another gem for you. Alicia Hutchinson (@overatalicias) and I have been hanging around the homeschool blogosphere and then Instagram for many years. Knowledge awakens. It’s the inspiring, startling, audacious claim of Charlotte Mason, a claim that’s at the heart of her method. “We know that religion can awaken souls,”[1] she writes. That claim isn’t so controversial, even today. But knowledge? I have to tell of the awakening of a ‘general soul’ at the touch of knowledge. Eight … The post All Ou…

Today’s guest is a perfect example of a beauty seeker, and sharer.
