Jeremy gained confidence to succeed in law. Now he’s finding courage to speak about the vulnerabilities that led him here in this episode of Unspoken: Conversations with Candace

Jeremy Chavez was born and raised in Racine. He graduated from Washington Park High School, got his BA at Marquette, and went to pursue his Law degree in Chicago. After law school he worked in the prosecutor’s office, had his private practice, and is now working in family law and business litigation. Jeremy is a passionate member of the community; he is the President of Por La Gente Association in Racine, he loves coaching youth football, and volunteers at local soup kitchens and legal clinics.

His forward to the Unspoken gave the book an insight from male perspective, setting the tone for the rest of the book from the legal perspective.

Episode highlights:

11:34 – Leave the world in a better place than it was when you found it.

20:20 – From my experience, on both sides of the table, as a prosecutor and as a defense attorney, the delayed reporting of sexual assault is more common than people realize. And there is a whole lot of trauma that comes with it. The passage of time does not make it any easier.

25:37 – I am bilaterally hearing impaired. I wear hearing aids in both ears. In early years it was something I was ashamed of.

30:40 – Your book has the ripple effect. After reading your book and writing the forward, I can see the value in sharing our darkness and our stories, so that other people who can relate, empathize or sympathize, can understand that where there is the will, there is the way.

33:10 – There are resources out there, but they are not communicated in the way that everybody knows where they are.
