Leading with growth mindset takes a certain amount of willingness to be vulnerable. Why? Because it means you own your mistakes. This isn’t easy in a society dominated by fixed mindset, which feeds the idea that if you make a mistake then you ARE a mistake. Fixed mindset leads to constantly trying to prove good enough because of a believe that we are born a certain way and cannot change. Thus, everything is an indication of our inherent being. Growth mindset is a belief that you can cultivate qualities. It feeds the idea that mistakes are opportunities because you can always learn to do better. Many current leadership trainings emphasize growth mindset and the term has become a bit of a buzz word but what it look like in a leader?

In this episode of Unlimited, the podcast, I invited Andre Vasquez, Alderperson of the 40th Ward in Chicago to join me in a conversation that emphasizes what it looks like to lead with growth mindset in life and government.

Some of what we talk about in this episode includes:

  • Owning your mistakes and making living amends
  • Authentically and imperfectly showing up
  • Normalizing self-doubt
  • Playing to your strengths
  • Owning your present moment
  • Being an activist outside and then inside the system
