Hong Kong’s Democracy Movement (0:31) In the largest round of mass arrests since China instituted a new law in Hong Kong over the summer aimed at silencing dissent, police last Wednesday raided the homes of and arrested more than 50 former lawmakers and activists involved in the pro-democracy movement there. Peter Hamilton is our guest and a professor of modern Chinese history at Trinity College Dublin. Hamilton just came out with a new book called, “Made in Hong Kong.” Caribbean Crabs and the Coral Reefs (20:58) In addition to pollution, warming, and acidifying waters, coral reefs have to content with choking seaweed. Marine scientists, like Mark Butler, are trying a natural solution–the king crab, which just loves to chomp seaweed. Butler is a Research Professor of Tropical Ecology at Florida International University. Here’s the App that Helps People With Special Needs Make Friends (40:47) People with autism can struggle to make friends. Juliana Fetherman saw her brother Matthew struggle with that, so she created a friend-finding app called Making Authentic Friendships to help him make connections. A Closer Look at the Latest US Dietary Guidelines (52:20) The US government has just released new dietary guidelines, which get an update every five years. Barbara Schneeman, a professor emerita of nutrition at UC Davis, chaired the scientific advisory committee that made recommendations on what should be included in the 2020 Dietary Guidelines. Why Every App Seems to Have Game-Like Features These Days (1:09:50) Whether it’s an app for meditating or getting fit or learning a new language, almost everything is designed to feel like a game these days: you get points for reaching goals, maintaining a streak, beating the high scores of other users. Kevin Werbach–professor of legal studies at The University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School and co-author of "For the Win: The Power of Gamification and Game Thinking in Business, Education, Government, and Social Impact"–studies how game-like features have seeped into nearly every corner of our lives in the last decade. As Brits Garden During the Pandemic, Archaeological Discoveries Abound (1:23:45) In the UK, gardeners and backyard metal detectors routinely find historic artifacts worth a lot–medieval weapons or gold coins, for example. In fact, last year–when so many people were stuck at home with only their yards to rummage around in–more than 47,000 artifacts turned up. Archaeologist Michael Lewis heads the program in the UK that registers these historic treasures uncovered by amateurs called the Portable Antiquities Scheme.
