Russia Hacked US Government Computers. Now What? (0:32) Despite no interference in the election, Russian hackers were busy burrowing into computers at the US Department of Defense, State, Homeland Security, Commerce, Treasury–and the list goes on. Russian hackers got into those computers and rooted around for at least nine months before being detected in December. But Eric Jensen says it's still not an act of war. Jensen is a professor of law at Brigham Young University, is an expert in cybersecurity law. Turning Public Health Issues Into Poetry (21:20) Epidemiological reports are usually in the form of data and scientific journal articles, but epidemiologist Ryan Petteway’s reports also take the form of poetry. He even had one of his COVID poems published in a scientific journal recently. Petteway is a professor at Oregon Health & Science University in Portland. A Game You Don’t Know You’re Playing (36:44) Alternate Reality Games are designed to make you question what's real and what's not. University of Chicago new media professor Patrick Jagoda has designed several of them for incoming freshmen to play for orientation at the start of a new year. How Race and Class Matter in Criminal Court (52:19) How you are treated in the justice system–and how you behave when you end up in court–depends a lot on the color of your skin and the money in your pocket. Stanford sociologist Matthew Clair wrote a book about this topic called “Privilege and Punishment: How Race and Class Matter in Criminal Court.” Talking With Your Kids About the Capitol Riots (1:32:14) How should parents talk to their kids about what’s going on in Washington right now? Or is it best if parents don’t bring it up with their kids? Rachel Wadham is an education professor and children’s librarian at Brigham Young University and host of the BYU Radio podcast Worlds Awaiting.
