The classic 1943 Frank Capra film, Arsenic & Old Lace, is as contrasting and paradoxical as the title suggests. The wacky and weirdly whimsical story begins by introducing Mortimer Brewster, a famed dramatic critic and anti-marriage author, at the courthouse to marry the lovely and witty Elaine Harper, his next-door neighbor. The absurdity of this tabloid news is hardly the oddest thing to happen to the couple. We come to learn that Mortimer’s two dear, elderly aunties have been secretly killing transients and burying them in the basement! One thing leads to another, taking us through unexpected twists and turns that just add to the lunacy of the story. So join us this week while we review this zany movie and enjoy a cocktail by the same name.
