Here is the fourth part of this series on English conversational basics. We are talking about the IIWC pattern. If you missed it, listen to the last 3 episodes where you learn other parts of the IIWC pattern.
Here is a quick review of the topic.
In most English-speaking countries in “The West”, there is a certain pattern in conversations. Here at social English, we want to help you understand the patterns of conversations.
The reason is to help you understand where conversations are starting and what the person who speaks to you is trying to achieve, or their goal. I am going to give you a structure that you can use to learn this pattern. You can even use it by listening to other people in conversations and see if you can hear the parts of this basic conversation pattern.
I want you to understand this pattern so that you can get more comfortable with speaking English to other people. When you understand the pattern, you will understand how western English speakers or native English speakers create conversations.
So what is this conversational pattern? I call it the “IIWC” pattern. Remember that the “IIWC” pattern is only used for meeting people for the first time.
Today we will cover the “W” in IIWC? The “W” stands for “Why?”. The "W" in Why is the 3rd action that happens in the conversation. The Why? W is used in conversation has an important purpose. At this point, you as the listener don’t know why the speaker has started a conversation with you.
The Why? W is meant to do this in the conversation. It also starts to build the next part of the conversation.
