My Time Overseas

Last summer I volunteered. I went overseas and helped build an elementary school. I was inspired to do it from a poster I saw at college. In that country, the gap between rich and poor is so great that poor people don’t have livable homes, let alone attend schools. I saw in the news that while there are students in Japan who are too poor in Japan to go to high school, in this country I went to, there are a great many people who not only can’t attend high school but also can’t attend elementary school.

The poster said, “Would you like to volunteer? Your single step might help someone else.” I thought if a female college student without any special skill were to volunteer, it might not make a difference. But, whether or not it makes a difference, I knew it would take away something from the experience, so I decided to join.

I was very nervous and could not sleep much the night before I left. I was going for two weeks. I was excited thinking about what would happened. I wanted to bring a single-lens reflex camera I bought myself as a university entrance present, but God forbid I lose it, so I decided to bring an old small digital camera this time. I’ll take all kinds of pictures with it.

Finally the day arrived; a 10 hour flight. Since I couldn’t sleep the night before, I was out like a light on the plane. The world we descended from was completely different from Japan. The first sounds that hit my ears were native voices speaking in every direction and car and motorcycle horns blaring. The smell of spices also drifted from out of nowhere. There were taxi drivers bargaining with customers and colorful billboards. I forgot to take pictures and just looked around stunned. Conversely, people stared at our backpack-clad group curiously. Everything in my view was unusual, and I didn’t want to shut my eyes, even for a second.

“Rika! Rika! Over here!” My senpai from the group called me with a loud voice and I was shocked back into reality. Wow, I was about to be left behind! I got on the bus, and the most unforgettable, action-packed two weeks in my life began.
