The opportunity is what we call “dependentorigination” in Buddhism. Normally, we could accomplish one task only when allits direct causes and supporting actions take effect harmoniously. Just like ina puzzle, every piece is an indispensable part to make the game a success.

If all the other pieces have been put intheir right places, then the only one missing part is considered as“opportunity”. When this last part is ready, we could win the game. It seemsthat this last part is especially important and maybe outweighs all the otherparts. But actually its success depends on whether other parts are ready ornot. This is why we say “the opportunity always favors a prepared person”.

On the other hand, we could easily feelconfused while trying to put together whole picture. After one to two pieces,we may find it hard to define the next coming part. Is it the right one? Or isit the wrong one? The puzzle in real life is different from the puzzle in agame. Its direct causes and supporting actions are not well-prepared andcomplete. They may be scattered everywhere. Paying attention to the externalsituation and making decisions accordingly would lead us nowhere. The right wayis to be ourselves, stick to our own direction, and be consistent with our ownvalues.

It’s easy to say “grasping the opportunity”afterwards, but hard to take actions when caught in real situation. Do notwaste time on speculating whether the external condition is an opportunity or adeviate path. Instead, be the master of our own mind. Make sure it is a mindfree from afflictions and a mind bent on planting good seeds.

面对纷繁的世界，你是不是常常感到迷惑？/机会

机会就是缘起，

一件事情要诸多因缘和合才能成办，

不是仅靠一个缘的，

就好像拼图一样，

每一块都不可或缺。

当你把其他地方都拼好了，

还差一块时，这一块就是“机会”，

当它到来时，你就能够认得；

能够把握住这个缘，事情就可以成办，

显得这个机会格外重要，

但其实这个成功是建立在

前面已经完成大部分的基础之上的，

也就是常说的

“机会总是青睐有准备的人”。

反过来说，

如果你只拼了一两块，

又遇到一块拼图，

你也不知道是自己需要的，

还是一个错的，就会迷惑，

因为生活的拼图不像游戏一样

是准备好的、齐全的、有限的。

此时把注意力放在外境上，

去判别它到底是对还是错，

是无解的，而应该做好自己，

坚持自己的方向，

坚守自己的价值。

“抓住机会”等说法，

都是事后总结的，

面对境界的时候，

你也不知道以后会怎样。

不要去妄想外境到底是机会还是歧路，

而是要把握自己的心

——不起烦恼的心、

种正因的心。
