A non-profit organization is looking for volunteers who can take care of puppies and help prepare them to be trained as service dogs in the future. Southeastern Guide Dogs breeds, trains, and places guide dogs free of charge for veterans and people with disabilities. The organization is looking for people who are willing to raise puppies in their homes for 16 months and bring them along wherever they go. Volunteers are expected to help the puppies learn basic obedience commands, interact with other canines and people, and experience as many new things as possible. The organization believes that the puppy-raising period will help puppies become comfortable with different situations, which they will experience once they start working as service dogs. Likewise, the volunteer program will make soon-to-be service dogs familiar with the home setting before their placement. When the puppies become older, they will be brought back to a training facility where they will master specific skills needed to be service dogs. Southeastern Guide Dogs has a support team that will assist and guide volunteers in raising the puppies. The organization will also give necessary tools and shoulder the puppy’s medical expenses. To qualify as a puppy raiser, a volunteer must be over 18 years old and financially able to cover the cost of food, approved toys, and other dog needs. The volunteer must be able to go to Florida to pick up the puppy and later return it to the training facility. Volunteers should be able to provide a safe environment for the puppies throughout the whole process.
