Welcome to “Head west, dig deep,” the latest podcast from Ohio Today radio. Use the player below to listen.
When 12 Ohio University students headed to Wyoming this spring for an intense week of placed-based, leadership education, Ohio Today radio was there to capture how they learned the language of grit. In its third year, the May Program is a partnership between OHIO and Teton Science Schools (TSS), which provides more than 15,000 people (from pre-k to 95) from around the world with a place-based education experience in America’s iconic Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem.
OHIO student participants were a mix of Margaret Boyd Scholars—OHIO’s first and only women’s scholars program—and the OHIO Fellows Program—a program for select students originally convened in the 1960s by OHIO’s 15th President Vernon R. Alden and relaunched in 2013 to support budding student leaders. Throughout the week, these students demonstrated their personal grit as they tackled physical, emotional, and academic challenges.
In this episode, Jennifer Shutt Bowie talks with OHIO Assistant Professor of Linguistics Michelle O’Malley to unpack how the TSS students experienced a subtle yet significant transformation to their language, interactions, and observations.
