In this episode, I discuss how our Gods changed over time, particularly between the periods of 40,000 BC to approximately the 4th CE and what were the circumstances that caused the change. I base this discussion on Britain but it will also be relevant to other areas.
Note - I mention in the podcast about Celtic Christianity venturing south into northern England after the Romans left, and it could be interpreted that I mean Christianity as a whole, but I refer to the fact that Rome decided upon a single Christianity around the 2nd CE and any teachings outside of this view could be punished by death. And this is where we get the idea of a "Celtic" Christianity because of the differences between those teachings and the ones recognised by Rome, which would have been taught by early Christians in the parts of Britain that were under the rule of the Roman Empire.
Thanks for listening everyone! For my ambient music please visit www.moonleaf.co.uk
Note - There are different views on the origin of the word "Celtic". To my knowledge, it was first recorded by the Greeks who called those that they met in Northern Europe, Keltoi, which means barbarians, or savages. The term was also used by Rome. And if you consider the fact that the Mediterranean people and those further south were far more advanced in their materials, their buildings, their cities, their roads, their housing, their clothing, and how they travelled, it is no wonder that they referred to people who were less "civilised" as savages. Particularly, as they were writing for a native Greek or Roman audience.
Another view I am aware of is from the French Druid organisation CEDECT which states that the group of letters which make up the word Celtiac, (possibly spelled differently), refer to the meaning of the home of the Divine. I guess this is a little like the Céile Dé; those who travel to and within the Divine. Similar words if you make the "d" a softer "t".
