Jason Piersialla, Programs Team Manager at Remote Year

In this episode, Katherine talks to Jason, the operations manager for her Remote Year group, about how he has been able to turn his passion for traveling into a career. Jason talks about how he decided to make international travel a priority in his life. He was able to find programs and scholarship opportunities to give him the financial support that he needed to travel internationally full time. After moving back to Chicago from Cambodia, Jason felt the pressure of settling down and getting a good job with benefits. Jason then decided to fulfill a lifelong dream of working with sled dogs- he moved to Finland for three months and worked with huskies at a sled dog company.

After working remotely at a digital consulting agency, he got laid off and eventually found his way to Remote Year. Jason talks about aiding in the overall development of Remote Year, as well as working through its everyday logistical complexities.

Jason travels the world with Remote Year, helping to ensure a seamless journey for their Remotes. He was the Operations Manager for Battuta, Remote Year's second group, from February 2016 - January 2017, and is now a Programs Team Manager. Outside of work, he enjoys traveling to new places, going hiking, and meeting street dogs.

Remote Year

As an operations manager for Remote year, it’s Jason’s job to coordinate and execute everything for the group -from facilitate relationships and events for the group on the ground to fulfilling the deliverables of the company (apartment, workspace, travel). Jason was the leader of the Remote Year’s second group, Buttuta. Buttuta’s itinerary was South America, Europe, and SE Asia (1 month in each place): Montevideo, Uruguay; Buenos Aires, Argentina; La Paz, Bolivia; Cusco, Peru; London, England; Prague, Czech Republic; Belgrade, Serbia; Split, Croatia; Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia; Koh Phangan, Thailand; Phnom Penh, Cambodia; Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam. Remote Year 2 Battuta demographics: age 23 - 65, average age of 29.

Jason is transitioning from an Operations Manager to Programs Team Manager. As a Programs Team Manager he will train and support the program leaders, rather than lead programs himself.
