A couple of early mornings ago I lay awake preparing myself to get up and to pray. I began to think about who and what I would pray about. A person came into my mind that I always pray for, and have for a long time. I began to feel discouraged, frustrated, even mad. My thoughts were about why they are so resistant. Why they will not come to the Lord more fully, and down went my heart. Immediately I heard these words within, "Why are you mad? I am not mad. There is no reason to be mad. I have long patience for them."

Just then I heard those words more fully within from James 5:7, "Be patient therefore, brethren, unto the coming of the Lord. Behold, the husbandman waiteth for the precious fruit of the earth, and hath long patience for it, until he receive the early and latter rain."

I knew the Lord was speaking to my heart by His own word. I saw that His long patience is deeply rooted in love. His love. The loving heart of our Father in heaven. In that few minutes of discouragement, frustration and anger, I can say there was no love, only hardness of heart, as if their refusal to give their life over to God depended on me.

I was wrong, and He showed me in His loving, patient way towards me. I looked back to my whole life journeying, and saw how great the long patience God had for me when I was full of pride, self involved and spiritually immature. Yet, because He loved me, He waited long. All that frustration and anger fled from me as the darkness flees away when the brilliant light of Christ invades Satan's spiritual darkness.

Amy Carmichael said, "We often make the mistake of trying to press people to accept Jesus before they have really been convicted and awakened to feel their need of a Savior. Or pressing them on to blessings they are not ready for, like the fullness of the Spirit, before they know about cleansing and consecration. It is as if we try to sow before the ground has been broken up by the plowshare, and we try to sow the ground before it has been broken up, and weeded and watered."

If we are to sow into the hard clay soils of their hearts, let us pray to the Lord to send rain, and let the soils of their hearts become soft with His showers. There is no limit for those who seek for Lord to prepare the soils before we even begin to cast seed into their grounds. We cannot ask too much of them, but we can ask all we can from God "who giveth rain in His seasons." Amen.
