In 2011, Syrian protests against the Assad regime escalated into a long and complex conflict between the Syrian government backed by Russia and Iran and rebel groups backed by the United States, Turkey, and Saudi Arabia. Diplomatic efforts have been unsuccessful as the Syrian regime has been accused multiple times of using chemical weapons in recent years. To date, over 400,000 people have been killed in Syria, fueling millions of Syrian refugees and internally displaced people.

Joining me today is former U.S. Ambassador to Syria Robert Ford. After finishing a 30-year career with the Peace Corps and the U.S. Department of State in 2014, Ambassador Ford is currently Kissinger Senior Fellow at the Yale Jackson Institute for Global Affairs and senior fellow at the Middle East Institute in Washington.
