Anamnesis comes from a Greek word meaning “remembrance”, and also has come to mean “the remembering of things from a supposed previous existence.” And that’s what we do here – we feature the recounting of amazing tales, heart wrenching accounts and poignant stories from physicians who do it every day. Now, we bring you a different theme to explore: Fight or Flight. I don’t know a single doc who doesn’t still enjoy – at least a little – the pitter patter of your heart that certain medical situations can get you in. It’s why we do it, our jobs are exciting, they’re impactful, they’re frequently unpredictable…because well, humans are unpredictable! I don’t want to mislead you. I love the sympathetic surge of epinephrine I get on shift. We love “fighting” in our own way whether it be through resuscitating a patient, throwing in crash chest tubes, or just the high of taking really excellent care of a patient. But the “flight” side of medicine shouldn’t be dismissed. Because for there to be life there must be death, for there to be good there must be evil. Sometimes we speed forward running on all cylinders – but other times, the right thing to do may be to step away, or even to say goodbye. We explore both of those sides in this episode: Chapter One, Naked Prisoner Brawl: Jeff gets to work and finds his prisoner patients naked, slathered in vaseline, and vomiting. Story told by Jeffrey E. Keller, MD, a physician practicing correctional medicine. Chapter Two, Trauma All Around: Five minutes before her shift ended as a resident, Rachel responds to a rapid response and finds a patient hanging from the shower. Story told by Rachel Bond, MD, a cardiologist. Chapter Three, Double Drowning Vacation: A tropical diving vacation turns into a sudden code for Andrew, who works to resuscitate two drowning divers who’s boat had capsized. Story told by Andrew Wilner, MD. Episode produced by Ashley Lyles Hosted by Amy Ho, MD Sound engineering by Greg Laub Music by Jason Asistores, MD aka flatfives. Theme music by Palomar
