Our decisions determine our direction. The power of God gives us strength. The support of community makes us free.
Many of us live in hyper individualistic societies that focus on personal responsibility.
Many of us come from highly spiritualized faith traditions that focus on the power of God.
Both of these are important, but they are incomplete if we neglect the role that the community must play in bringing freedom and liberation to our neighbors.
I know one gentleman who God empowered to move from unemployment and homelessness to full time work as an over the road truck driver. He worked hard to complete his training and pass all his tests.
Yet it took the community helping him navigate the court systems and paying his old fines to allow him to become eligible.
It took the community providing him with gas money and food to eat while he got himself eligible with God’s help.
We have a responsibility to help unbind our neighbors in order for them to become free.
