Today we cover another new word or phrase that you may not be familiar with in today's"What does this mean?" episode.
In these episodes, we take a word that you may think that you know the meaning of.
What is different about this episode is that you will learn a new word that you may be calling something else.
Today's word is..."sitcom".
This word is very popular and used by many native English speakers.
I want to talk about what this is in Japan.
I have met and made many friends with Japanese people over the years.
When I ask them about things that they like from my country, America.
they usually say 3 things.
What are these 3 things?
Well, these Japanese friends say that they like American music, Hollywood movies, and dramas.
I sometimes laugh a little bit.
Why?
Because we have many different ways to call TV shows or series.
When I speak to Japanese people, they tend to call every show, a“ drama”.
I even had an adult student recently call,” Friends” a drama.“
Friends” is not a drama, it's a sitcom; sit-com.
So...what is a sitcom?
A sitcom is a “situation” comedy...
