Every week, in just about every country in the world, millions of footballers take the pitch playing the game they love. 22 players put their heart and soul into the match, to try and walk away with victory. No matter the age, the level, the country or the match result, there’s always one thing you can guarantee: the referee will be a talking point.
Referees are so crucial to football. Competitive matches literally cannot happen without them. Yet, every single week, they are the biggest talking point in the game. The deal with abuse from players and fans during the game, and endless scrutiny afterwards, whether they make a mistake or not.
We’re all guilty of it; a football fan who says they’ve never criticised a referee is a liar. But how do you become a referee? Perhaps more importantly, WHY would you become one?
