「今週のフレーズ」 all bark and no bite
Saori: Remember our old boss who was really strict about time? She would notice if we came back five minutes late from lunch, and had people report to her if other people had not been on time in the morning when she wasn't there?
Sean: Yeah. Those were dark times. I remember being taken aside to be told that I took too much time getting coffee at the coffee shop downstairs.
Saori: That's right! I remember that.
Sean: But it was so unfair, because all I did was go downstairs, get in line, buy my coffee, and come right back up. I would at most get coffee once a day, some days not even. But people who took smoking breaks several times a day were never a target of her reprimands.
Saori: It was really unreasonable.
Sean: She was all bark and no bite, though. She would take us aside and threaten to demote us if we kept taking a few minutes longer for lunch or got to work a few minutes late, but she never took any action.
Anne: There may not have been any "bite," but there was a lot of "barking," and it was demoralizing.
