Dublab x FEMMEBIT Present: The Art of Performance – W/ Jackie Stewart and Eva Aquila. Jackie “Oblivia” Stewart started performing sound in 1979 in Portland, Oregon. Mostly performing within groups until 2001, when she performed a DJ “throw down” of sorts (both DJ’s performed at the same time) and it ended up as a collaboration. Groups Jackie has performed in include “the improvs” (1979), “Spy vs. Spy” (1980), “Babylon 2000” (1981-83), and “Smegma” (1982-present). Though Stewart experimented on guitar and very much enjoys vocals, she has found her focus with turntables. Her visual art medium is assemblage or collage, so it comes naturally to Jackie to assemble sounds. She enjoys hearing how beautiful or humorous “mixing” can be, in the same way things come together visually when assembling her cut-up art pieces. With Smegma she says “I can enjoy a freedom of expression, totally unrestricted and of my own: as in I choose to interpret what my part will sound like. It has enabled me to learn much about recording and live performance.” Jackie’s sounds have appeared on dozens of releases, both solo and in group formats, in addition to her work with video. Eva Aguila is a multidisciplinary artist and organizer from Los Angeles, CA. Aguila’s artistic background includes, video, performance, and sound. Her passion for video art started in 2010 when she started the cable access television show, Experimental Half-Hour with her partner Brock Fansler. Through Experimental Half-Hour, Aguila collaborated, curated, and applied analog special effects with performers and other video artists to create collaborative art videos. Aguila co-created Coaxial Arts Foundation in 2015 as a way to further the community of media art in LA, as well as foster the community itself. Her passion for grassroots organizing started as a need to uplift underrepresented art communities. Inspired by the in-between and structuralist techniques, her work most recently is informed by the oral histories and Mexican diaspora of rural communities of Michoacan where her parents and family are from. The performances aim to create a physical and conceptual space that enriches and promotes the practice of Los Angeles musicians and visual artists. Funding from this grant, has enabled both organizations to pair six visual artists with six musicians to create 6 new collaborative audiovisual performances. Each performance consists of an original, A/V set. The performance will be broadcast on Dublab’s webstream this Saturday 19th at 4pm. This grant received from mediaThe foundation inc, supports DUBLAB and FEMMEBIT’s shared aim to promote and support our community of LA-based filmmakers, musicians, animators, and creative coders. The project’s all-female roster also aligns with FEMMEBIT’s mission to create a platform for female-identifying artists working in video and new media. By providing diverse talent from DUBLAB and FEMMEBIT’s communities with technical resources, physical space, and a wide-reaching web platform, The Art of Performance provides a unique opportunity for the dynamic, synesthetic aspects of live audiovisual performance to flourish and be shared with an audience now and for years to come.
